Mount Kenya National Park At 5,199m, with 2800 sq.kmis located to the east of the Great Rift Valley, about 175km North-East of Nairobi.  The ecosystem lies in Central and Eastern provinces of Kenya. Mt. Kenya is Africa’s second highest peak. Mount Kenya is a UNESCO World Heritage site and seat of the Kikuyu God, Ngai. The Reserve is home to rare species of animals as well as spectacular lakes, mineral springs and forests. The mountain is an incredibly important watershed, providing water for about 50% of Kenya’s population and producing 70% of Kenya’s hydroelectric power.

CLIMATE: Climate, flora and fauna on Mt. Kenya varies with altitude

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS: Pristine wilderness, lakes, tarns, glaciers and peaks of great beauty, geological variety, forest, mineral springs, rare and endangered species of animals, High altitude adapted plains game, Unique montane and alpine vegetation with 11 species of endemic plants.

WILDLIFE: Include Elephants, tree hyrax, white tailed mongoose, suni, black fronted duiker, mole rat, bushbucks, water buck and Elands. Animas rarely seen include leopard, bongo, giant forest hog and rhino.

BIRDS: Over 130 bird species have been recorded.

SEASONS
Daytime temperatures are pleasant year round and do not vary considerably, but during the dry season winter months, the nights get extremely cold.Rainy Season: April to June – hot and wet (long rains), November to December – warm and wet (shortrains).Dry Season: January to March – hot and dry, July to October – warm and dry with freezing nights.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU: Drinking water, picnic items and camping equipment if you intend to stay overnight, walking boots, warm clothing, training shoes, socks, sandals and gaiters. Also useful are: binoculars, camera, hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and guidebooks.
