Lake Bunyonyi (“Place of many little birds”) lies in south western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale close to the border with Rwanda. Located at 1,962 m (6,437 ft) above sea level, it is about 25 km (15.5 mi) long and 7 km (1.35 mi) wide. The depth of the lake is rumored to vary between 44 m (144 ft) and 900 m (2,952 ft).Undeniably the loveliest lake in Uganda, Bunyonyi contains 29 islands, many of which are inhabited and terraced for agriculture. Wake to school children paddling dug-out canoes through the morning mist as crested cranes fly overhead.The lake surface is a fresh 25 degrees celcius, bilharzia free and safe for swimming. Visitors come to enjoy the scenery and relax. Swimming in the lake is popular as are dugout canoe excursions. Bird life is prolific (over 200 species recorded) with Uganda’s national bird the Crested Crane a common sighting. Fish on the other hand are extremely scarce. The bi-weekly Rutindo market on Monday and Friday is a colorful affair attracting flotillas of canoes on the lake with basket loads of vegetables and other goods.
